The 5-Cities U14-boys team did well in Bakersfield the weekend of March 2.
They came out of their pool-play undefeated on Saturday; shutting out Victorville 1 to 0, Visalia 2 to 0 and Santa Barbara 2 to 0.
If you think about it, being one of four teams going into the Sunday medal-round was the California AYSO equivalent of reaching the Sweet-16 in college basketball; four teams each in the four CA AYSO Regions battling to see who goes on to the upcoming State tournament in Davis. One of our players broke his collar bone in the Visalia game on Saturday.
They lost the Sunday morning game to Saugus 0 to 3. Saugus went on to take first-place in the tournament.
In the Sunday consolation game our U14B team took Cutler-Orosi (Tulare) to a 2 to 2 tie in regulation. They were still knotted at 2 to 2 after the two overtime periods, and settled the match via shoot-out. Our keeper made two great saves, and our team won. Final score 5 to 4, good for third-place. I like to think it’s the equivalent to placing somewhere between 9th and 12th in the State!
