5 Cities AYSO Soccer Team Wins Big

What began as a dream for nine young AYSO All Stars soccer players from the 5 Cities in December of 2015, culminated with the crowning of their team as Champions of the AYSO Western States Championships this past weekend in Bullhead City, Arizona.

The states represented in the tournament were California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Nevada.

“This all-star team accomplished an amazing feat that has never been achieved from our area before,” said Paul B. Parker, a team parent. “5 Cities Ayso began in 1975, and this is the first team to win the Western States Region in any age bracket for boys or girls.”

The 5 Cities U10 Boys AYSO All Star team from AYSO Region 83 was invited to participate in the exclusive invitational tournament after winning both the local Area Q Championships in Paso Robles, and then the Section 10 Championships in Bakersfield against teams from Southern California.

In the semi-final of the Western States Championships against the San Gabriel All Stars team, 5 Cities found themselves in an unfamiliar position. The team was down 0-1 entering the 4th quarter.  Then 2 minutes in, they fell behind 0-2.  The 5 Cities team had never been behind in the 4th quarter and had never trailed by more than a single goal all season.  Momentarily, the young player’s heads dropped.  Coaches Mike Scott and Enrique Diaz calmly called the team together and got the players smiling.

Jonathan Aguilar, the 5 Cities dangerous striker, began to push the ball down to the far corner.  Aguilar sent a beautiful cross all the way across the field to the left striker, Estevan Diaz, who buried a shot into the net to make the score 1-2.  With the momentum building and only a couple minutes left in the game, Aguilar passed to Luke Parker, one of the team’s center-mids.  In one fluid motion, Parker hammered the shot into the far corner from just inside the penalty box and the game was tied 2-2.

The 5 Cities stout defense led by Nick Scott, Ty Jones, Jack Canigiula, Samuel Hill, and goalie, Skylar Karstetter, repelled all of San Gabriel’s dangerous attacks in the last minute of regulation and 2 overtime periods.  With the game to be decided by penalty kicks, Zachary Soriano calmly and successfully made the first kick for 5 Cities.  Karstetter made a huge block on San Gabriel’s first penalty kick and the resilient 5 Cities boys won the penalty kicks and won the game.

The championship match pitted 5 Cities against South Gate.  With a complete team effort, 5 Cities sealed their special and historic season with a 1-0 victory!  After the physically and emotionally draining semi-final game, the team had to contend with 95- degree weather for the championship game. The team jubilantly celebrated their memorable season with a plunge into the Colorado River next to the soccer fields after the game.
